Why Sports?

Many athletes realize that the competitiveness of the sport, combined with their own personal fears of failing or missing out on an opportunity to excel at their game can cause them to hone their ability to focus and succeed in their athletic activity. Being good at sports also helps athletes feel good about themselves. They may be physically fit, but the bonds they develop with their teammates, coaches and training staff may boost their confidence even further. People who participate in athletic activity may sometimes have lower anxiety levels than those who do not.

Another benefit of sports is that they can increase one’s self-confidence. As the sport makes a person physically fit, he or she will find that their performance at the sports level is usually much better than it was in the gym or other work environments. The athlete is able to ‘show-up’ and ‘confront’ the opponent, knowing that they will have an advantage over the other because of their physical capabilities. This, in turn, gives them a mental edge that will help them perform better in their next match. Sports help a person develop social skills, and even the most confident person can often fall behind in a competition because of their lack of social interaction and/or confidence.

It should be noted that many physical education courses teach young people about physical activities and sports, but very few discuss the mental aspects of sports. Children are exposed to all sorts of negative reinforcement while in sports, and it can make them feel less confident about themselves. But the mental aspect of sports can be just as bad, if not worse, than the physical. In order for young people to have confidence and overcome negative thinking patterns, sports must be encouraged and accessible. For instance, if soccer is one of the children’s sports, the parents should not be required to spend countless hours at a gym, working on the team’s fitness.

Sports teach kids how to persevere, how to challenge opponents physically, how to be gracious in victory, and how to enjoy the moment. The mental and emotional rewards of sports help children grow into well-rounded human beings who respect everyone in sports and society as individuals with their own unique qualities. These are important concepts that we should all consider as important aspects of sports. Just like physical activity, sports should be encouraged for the right reasons… for growth and development.
